Good to know about your research.

I played tenor horn when David Loukes was conducting in the late 80's.

My friend David Houghton was on the back row.

I seem to recall that my last job was the all england masters in the corn exchange, Cambridge - than a really good concert in the lake district.

Unfortunately I dont think I have anything that you can use regarding Besses.

I only left Besses due to work when I moved to Essex in 1989 / 90.

I am now living & working in Chengdu, Sichuan China (in the wild west) but am being transfered to Dalain (north east China) from the end of August.

Best wishes with your research & please stay in touch.

I played with Besses in the mid eighties as 1st Horn.

I had previously played for Rochdale Wilsons Band and briefly Wingate’s.

My memories are of a band working hard to maintain status against Fairies etc all being sponsored.

David Loukes was conductor and we had some contest success under his baton.

I also remember Gary Cutt & Roy Newsome conducting the band as guests.

My friend David Houghton (repiano cornet) was in the band and we worked together at British Aerospace in Lostock, Horwich and traveled together to jobs.

At this time we went to the Royal Naval College in Grenwich, London.

We had premiered a tuba concerto with James Gourlay in Nottingham on the Friday night & went to London on the Sunday.

We got back to the Bandroom at 3.40am and I had to be in work at 8am. I was shattered.

At about this time I guested for Black Dyke at the Metro Theatre in Oldham as 2nd Horn.

My last job with Besses was the all England masters in Cambridge. A great contest & venue.

James Murray and his wife attended mu wedding in Nov. 1986 and it was great to see Jim and his wife a couple of months ago, totally by accident as a Police officer I knew at school knew his sister here in Essex. It was lovely to chat about old times.

Sadly, I left the band in 1990 to take up a teaching appointment in Basildon, Essex. Which effectively ended my brass band career.

I am currently living and working in Chengdu, China but will never forget my time with the best brass band in the world.

Best wishes for the research & please stay in touch.
