New MD at Besses
Besses O’ Th’ Barn Band are delighted to announce their new musical director, Jonathan Lo.
Jonny proved the outstanding candidate in a fine field of applicants for the MD’s position at Besses and the band are looking forward to a successful year with Jonny at the helm.
Jonny is completely new to the brass band field, although he has been known to play a French Horn in the distant past! He is currently at the prestigious Royal Northern College of Music studying towards a Masters in Conducting, having completed his undergraduate studies at Oxford University.
Despite his lack of brass banding experience, Jonny brings clarity, direction and pure musicality to the bandroom and the band hope this will translate into success on the concert and contest stage.
Chair Matt Bailey said, “From the minute he took up the baton in front of the band, it was clear that Jonny was a very special talent indeed. The band is very privileged to have a Musical Director of his calibre and we’re very excited with the direction he is taking us”.
Jonny will have his first public engagement with the band at a special concert for the Disasters Emergency Committee in aid of the Haiti Earthquake. More details to follow soon.
Besses still have a few vacancies in the band: front row cornets, back row cornets, percussion, tenor trombone and Bb bass.

A big thank you to everyone who was out to support Besses and Affetside Choir at Radcliffe Civic Suite yesterday afternoon.
We had a sold out concert yesterday afternoon, for a selection of music for Brass and Voices bringing everyone into the Christmas spirit.
Have a look around the website for information on the rest of our performances for 2009.
We should especially thank the players that helped us out in yesterday's concert - it is much appreciated.
A final massive thanks to Dr Roy Newsome, our guest conductor for yesterday's concert, for his hard effort and excellent work with the band preparing for the concert.

Newsome and Besses Team Up For ChristmasBesses O’Th’ Barn Band are pleased to announce a special guest conductor for their Christmas engagements – Dr Roy Newsome.
Dr Newsome, who conducted the band in their heyday, will be fronting the band over the festive period as the band recruits new players and plans to announce their new permanent musical director in the near future.
Besses and Dr Newsome have a longstanding relationship based on past success and the hope that Besses will continue on the path to recapturing their past glories. For band members this Christmas, Dr Newsome will be the best present, bringing with him his wealth of experience and unparallelled skills in front of a band.
Due to recent player movements, Besses are inviting people who wish to take part in their Christmas concerts to contact with band chair Matt Bailey on 0161 723 5272 or

. He said, “This is a great chance to work with Dr Newsome and have some festive fun at the same time. We’d like any old Besses players to get in touch, as well as anyone else with availablity over the Christmas period. This is one more step along the road to recovery for one of the oldest and most famous names in banding, and with hard work, dedication and teamwork, we’ll make these concerts something to look back on with pride.”
